1-Day Easy Cleanse

food health Jun 01, 2016

You have most likely heard, read or even done a juice fast. It's a great way to detox, lose weight quickly and give the digestive system a break. 3 to 7 days of just juice a couple of times a year, once in the spring and once in the autumn, is often recommended as a regular cleansing detox.

Some people go for up to 21 days of juicing and if you are healing from a serious health condition you may have considered juicing even longer. Watch my video for a short explanation of the difference between juices and smoothies.

For me and my husband, juicing is now a daily part of our lives. A large green juice is our first meal of the day, supplying our bodies with rapid, easily absorbable nutrition, giving us already a minimum of five portions of veg and fruit early in the morning.

Now, if you are on a standard diet, including grains and animal proteins, then juicing will most likely throw you into quite a bit of a detoxification. So you should set some time aside for your juice fast. Make sure you have no social or work commitments during your juice fast and shop for everything you need ahead of time.  If you have never done a juice fast before, I highly recommend you get some help. Go on a juice fast retreat, work with a nutritional therapist or a nutrition coach. Juice fasting can bring up a lot of stuff, both physically and emotionally.

But this post is about something much simpler.

A day of liquid meals!

This is an easy to implement, delicious way to gently cleanse the digestive system without throwing your body into major detoxification. Beware though, if you've never eaten raw before or have never had more than the occasional fruit laden smoothie, you could still experience symptoms such as headaches and fatigue, so take it easy on the day you do this.

Please consult your doctor before attempting a liquid fast day if you have a seat serious health condition!

So how do you do it?

Below I will give you a menu plan, equipment needed and a shopping list as well as the recipes.

Menu Plan:

7am Early Morning:

Lemon & Cayenne Cleanse

9am Breakfast:

Mean Green Juice

12pm Lunch:

Creamy Protein Smoothie

3pm Snack:

Red Spicy Juice

6.30pm Dinner:

Avocado & Spinach Soup

All through the day: Drink plenty of water. Herbal teas are also allowed! A good rule of thumb is to drink a large glass of water after every visit to the toilet (sorry, my American friends, I mean 'bathroom') and whenever you feel thirsty or hungry in between your meals.

You will have noticed that your last meal is scheduled for 6.30pm – so plan in an early night (going out is not a good idea after a cleansing day!) and give your body a good number of hours without any food until the next morning.

Equipment: A sharp knife, a chopping board, a juicer, a blender, nice glasses (a nice glass makes drinking juices and smoothies so much more fun).

If you don't have a juicer and don't want to invest in one at this point, you can blend the ingredients into smoothies. Or borrow a juicer from a friend for the day.

Recipes
All recipes are for 2 people. If your on your own, make half the amount or make the full amount and freeze the other portion for another day!

Please use organic fruit and vegetables where ever possible!

Lemon and Cayenne Cleanse

800ml water
Juice of 1 lemon (reserve the lemon skins for use in the Mean Green Juice)
1/16 to 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

Bring the water to just before boiling point. Divide into 2 large cups and add half of the lemon juice and half of the cayenne to each cup. Stir and drink slowly.

Note: Rinse your mouth with water after drinking this and don't brush your teeth until half an hour later. Lemon juice can softens the tooth enamel and you don't want to damage your teeth. So just wait a little.

Mean Green Juice (actually this isn't that mean at all, as the watermelon really takes the edge of the greens):

200g leafy greens (spinach, kale, chard, lambs lettuce, romaine lettuce, beet greens, broccoli)
50g herbs and/or wild greens (dandelion, parsley, coriander/cilantro, mint, basil, oregano, marjoram, nettle)
1 lemon skin (Use left over skin from Lemon & Cayenne Cleanse)
1 cucumber
4 sticks celery
600-700g watermelon (use with skin if organic, otherwise use the flesh only)
1” fresh ginger
1” fresh turmeric (optional)
6-8 black peppercorns (only if you're using the turmeric. Black pepper helps to absorb the curcumin in turmeric)
a couple of drops of cold pressed oil (sesame, avocado, sunflower or hemp)

Cut all fruit and veg to fit your juicer. Juice all ingredients and drink 400-500ml.

Reserve the rest for lunch.

Creamy Protein Smoothie

Remainder of morning Mean Green Juice
600g Watermelon, skin removed
Juice of 1 lemon (reserve the skins)
2 tbsp hemp powder (I use the white hemp powder, but normal green powder is also okay, just a bit stronger in flavour)
2 tbsp freshly ground linseed (flax seed)

Chop the watermelon to fit your blender. Blend with the lemon juice, hemp powder and linseed for 30-60 seconds. Add the green juice and blend briefly again. Leave to sit for 1 minute to allow the linseed to swell. Pour into glasses and drink slowly.

Red Spicy Juice

1 large beetroot (beet)
6 medium carrots
1 apple
½ fresh red chilli (taste the hotness of your chilli and use more or less depending on your preference)
1 lemon skin (use left over skin from Creamy Protein Smoothie)
1”-2” fresh ginger

Chop all ingredients to fit your juicer. Juice the ingredients and pour into glasses. Some nice wine-glasses really add to the experience.

Avocado and Spinach Soup

150g baby spinach
Juice of 1 lemon (reserve the skins for next day's juice... if you want to keep juicing)
2 tbsp chopped parsley
2 tbsp chopped basil
½ to 1 tsp sea salt
2 cups water (if you prefer a warmer soup, use hot water, but not boiling!)
2 ripe avocados
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Black pepper

Blend all ingredients except avocado for 30-60 seconds. Add the flesh from the avocados and blend again for 30 seconds. Pour into two soup bowls, drizzle with olive oil and grind some black pepper on top. Eat slowly.
