3 great ways to create a life-changing raw food retreat for yourself

In my last blog post we talked about why it’s so important to occasionally get away from it all and in this article I’d like to give you 3 ideas on how you can do this.


1 Take a Day out at home

This is a low-cost, easy retreat to organise if you have the ability to get the peace and quiet you need at home.


Here’s how to do it:

Tell friends and family that you’re taking a day out and that you don’t want to be disturbed. If you have a partner, you might want to do this together.
Get yourself prepared by organising all the raw food you want to eat on the day.
Do you want to have a luxury retreat with amazing dishes? In London you can now order in your raw food from Nama or perhaps you have a raw chef near you who will prepare the food for you. Alternatively you could make it a detox day and use my ‘1-Day Easy Cleanse Plan’ to cover your food needs.
Juices and smoothies can all be prepared the day before and most raw food dishes easily keep for three day in the fridge.
Turn off telephone, email and social media! This is essential. You won’t get a break if you keep checking what’s going on on Facebook or Instagram.

Have some good books available. Perhaps a feel good novel to escape to, or some inspirational books like The Universe has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein or educational raw food books like Raw Food for Dummies by Cherie Soria or Conscious Eating by Gabriela Cousens.
Find some good movies to watch. Something funny, something romantic but stay away from intense thrillers or violent movies… Or find an inspirational movie on FMTV.
Go for walks, reflect, rest, write in your journal.
Get some gorgeous, chemical free bubble bath, put on a rejuvenating face mask and enjoy a relaxing bath by candle light. YES, guys enjoy this too, my husband is evidence of this.
Get an early night before and after with at least 12 hours fasting time over night.


3 Rent a self catering cabin or cottage
You might want to extend your retreat a little, or perhaps home is not a place where you can get away from it all. I recently stayed in a simple shepherd's hut in a field for a couple of nights and I can highly recommend it.


Actually three nights would be better, so you can settle into the new environment better. All the details described above will apply, though a cabin may not give you the option to have your bath by candle light. It depends on what type of accommodation you chose. Some places have hot tubs, and some even offer local massage therapists to come in. Do your research! 

Important is that you prepare your food well. You don’t want to have to think about what to eat or where to shop. Therefore a big cool box full of ready-made raw dishes, juices, smoothies, fruit and snacks is advisable. Most raw dishes keep well for up to three days and many can also be frozen. I usually take frozen green juice for every day of my away time. The less preparation you have to do during your retreat the more time you have to relax and rejuvenate.


3 Take yourself on a raw food retreat

Of course the ultimate gift to yourself is to go on an organised raw food retreat. There are plenty of options available. No need to pretend I won’t recommend my own, as I believe they deliver the optimum combination of relaxation, nurturing and transformation. Going on retreat is particularly good if you’re still struggling with making all the raw food for yourself. Or, if you’re like me, you want a break from all the preparing and clearing up and some additional benefits. 

Nothing beats having everything catered for and all you have to do is turn up! It's also a wonderful way to meet and spend time with like-minded people, because, let's face it, living a raw food lifestyle can get a bit lonely.
